Squirrel Squad Nurture Group

Who are we?
We are a KS2 Nurture group based within Totternhoe C.E Academy.  Our staff are specially trained on the theory and practice of Nurture Groups.   We aim to provide an individualised programme of education focusing in the social and emotional needs of the children who are finding adapting to the requirements of formal learning challenging and overwhelming.

Parents
It is vital that home, school and the Nurture group work together to achieve the best for every child.  We really value the thoughts and views of parents, particularly if they notice any positive changes in their children during their time in the Nurture Group.

What do we do?
We aim to provide a caring, stable and supportive environment, where trained staff can help children overcome their difficulties. This is a short-term intervention (typically up to 4 terms) and helps to give children early support. The Nurture group has a homely and calm atmosphere and consists of 2 areas:  home, learning and play. We are extremely lucky to be able to use our Wonder Wood for some outside space. Squirrel Squad runs 3 afternoons a week, meaning the children remain in their classes for their core subjects and so are able to maintain positive links with their class teacher and peers.  If special class events fall on Nurture days, the children will be encouraged to spend time with their class.  We use different assessment tools in consultation with class teacher, parents and the child to monitor social and emotional progress, as well as academic progress.

What do the children learn?
The Nurture Group curriculum incorporates all areas of learning and similar activities to those in the mainstream class; however, it is delivered in a slightly different way.  It addresses each child’s needs and presents learning in small attainable steps which in turns leads to:
  • Success
  • Confidence
  • Raised self-esteem
  • Enjoyment of learning

Teaching is delivered through carefully structured topics, play and practical activities. Children learn about talking and listening to each other, co-operation, team work, feelings, healthy lifestyles and respect for each other.  The Group has a daily snack time together which is an important time for sharing news, taking turns listening to each other and reinforcing good behaviour.

What does our day look like?
Nurture  sessions are held during the afternoon and typically follow the same pattern:
Relaxation and Feelings
Activities
Snack
Play/Choosing
Reflection
